A stained-glass replica of a fabric quilt, Identity Quilt was born out of the pressure to be skilled at domestic work traditionally designated for women. Feeling like I didn’t fit into the typical crafts of knitting and sewing that my mother and grandmother excel in, I redefined what is possible. The stars display each color of the rainbow to represent my queer identity, a concept foreign to my heteronormative middle class family. The medium itself is cumbersome, and even violent at times as I cut and burn my hands to make a beautiful window. This process parallels that of my coming of age as I attempted to explore my sexuality and define my mental health.
